New Moon Ritual - DIY

New Moons & Rituals

The new moon has arrived again, as it does every 29.5 days or so. She represents our emotions (the astrological sign of Cancer) and supports us in healing, balancing our emotional bodies and using our emotional intelligence to support our self-evolution, among other magical things!

I will go a little more in depth of how to create your own New Moon Ritual below, but let’s get clear on a few things first.

I feel it’s important to mention there really is no right or wrong way to creating a new moon ritual. You could easily gather some of the practices I mention here plus some of your own or create your own process altogether. This is simply here as inspiration and guidance for those that appreciate it!

And for some, you might be asking “What is a ritual, anyways?

A ritual is a practice and/or ceremony that gives reverence to a certain cultural belief or value. These rituals usually consist of a sequence of actions performed in a timely pattern depending on what exactly is being honored and most likely in the same space (like an altar space or meditation room).

For example, the new moon comes every 29-ish days, so the new moon ritual would be performed about once a month. Maybe you would also incorporate a Full Moon Ritual, and maybe even a quarter-moon ritual to honor all phases / the full cycle.

Again, there are many ways to honor the moon (and other planets), so there is no right or wrong way. Yet, there is a power within repetition and consistency. Creating energetic patterns for our body, mind and Soul to plug into and flow with, and continuously re-emphasizing their energy signatures by following similar processes at similar times, helps to create a momentum in the energetic manifestation we are calling into existence through the ritual.

It’s your choice, AND I also invite you to commit to doing at least 3 in a row, and notice any and all amazing outcomes that may stem from your rituals.

New Moon Ritual

To make this the most easy process to follow and for the most effective results, I created the image above with a methodical approach. If you take another look, you will see I created it in a step-by-step process where you start at the top center and flow to the right.

It’s nice to create a small altar space with sacred items, sage, crystals, oracle cards and any other tools that might help your process.

Here’s a little more explanation of each step!

Step 1 : Clean & Organize
New Moons are about clarity, moving forward with creation and using up the space that was created through the full moon release processes. However, sometimes there is leftover clutter, trash, dust and cobwebs, which can really hinder the ability to move freely and use all the space you need.
Your surroundings represent your mind and vice versa.
Look around you. Notice what needs some dusting, a little sprucing up or some reorganization and get to it! You will feel much clearer and ready to get to manifesting once this is complete!

Step 2 : Clear Energy
While dusting/cleaning definitely can clear the space, sometimes some extra help is needed. Using intention, visualization and energy clearers like Sound, Sage and Smokey Quartz can help to clear any stagnant or lingering energies both in your surrounding space and your temple/body.
Sound could be intentional toning/singing with your voice, sound bowls, gongs, didgeridoos, rattles, rain sticks. Using these sounds backed by intention/visualization of clearing space.

Step 3 : Get into & Open Your Temple
This is about anchoring into your body aka Grounding. Incorporating conscious deep breathing (inhale reaching into your lower belly first - fill your cup), conscious movement either through different types of asana-based yoga and/or conscious dance, and toning/chanting is a powerful addition.
Just to point out, when I say conscious I simply mean being present within the moment, being aware of each breath, each movement. If you feel your mind wandering off on a train of thought, call your attention back to you ritual.

Step 4 : Heart-Focused Breathing
Still allowing your full breath into the belly, you are shifting the point of attention to your heart space by imagining your breath moving in through the heart space and out through the heart space. I suggest allowing a minimum of 6 deep heart-focused breaths in before moving onto the next step.
The reasoning for this - your heart has the strongest electro-magnetic field in your entire body (yes, even stronger than the brain!). Bringing attention to your heart with conscious breath helps to further anchor you into your body AND help to regulate/balance all of your other systems. e.g. Emotional body, Mental Body, Heart Rate, Brain Waves, Respiratory System and so on.

Step 5 : Go Within & Meditate
There are many different types and levels of meditation. All of them help to strengthen our abilities to tame the overactive mind, be present in the moment which increases our flow of creativity and natural health, AND helps us to connect more to the profound intelligence of our human temple.
The heart-focused breathing is a great meditation to continue on with. Whatever meditation you choose, I feel gifting this step at least 5 minutes is a great choice!
TIP: If setting an alarm helps you to drop in, do that!
What is Meditation & what is it not? It’s important to note, meditation isn’t necessarily about ‘clearing’ the mind completely. While getting to a clear mind can be an amazing experience, it is important to realize the mind doesn’t necessarily just ‘turn off’. So the main practice becomes witnessing the thoughts and strengthen the mind-muscle to let those thoughts pass by while keeping your focus/attention on this moment. If you catch yourself floating off with one of those thoughts, simply call your awareness back to the present moment.
Having a point of focus helps me a lot. e.g. Focusing on my breathing or on my 3rd eye (eyes closed, bringing the eyes to focus on the point between the brows inside).

Step 6 : Expand Vision & Imagination
Now that you have calmed the mind a bit, this is a great time to move into contemplation within your meditative space. Let your imagination unravel itself, let your mind play. In my own practice, sometimes this is where I bring in an instrument like the Gongs or Singing Bowls that I can play with my eyes closed.

Ask your Self questions & OBSERVE what comes through, like:
What is alive in me right now?
What am I passionate about?
What does my inner child want? Play? Creativity?
Who am I inspired by and why?
What ways can I bring more love into my life?
What ways can I bring more color and passion into my life?
What dreams would I love to bring into fruition?
In what ways can I create my dreams into reality?

Step 7 : Reassess Dreams
This is a powerful step in getting clear on whether the path your on, your plan of action, your daily practices and/or your work make sense to where you really want to be and the direction you are wanting to move in.
This step is about making sure your actions are representing your dreams, while offering space to adjust and implement new ways/steps of getting there. Sometimes there is a complete readjustment of life altogether at this stage. That’s totally okay. Gift your Self permission to change anything and everything where it is needed.

ADDITIONAL STEP SUGGESTION: Sometimes it’s nice to add Oracle Cards or Tarot Cards for extra insight and guidance at this point.

Step 8 : Goals, Steps, Action
This is where you set yourself up for success. It is important to create space and time to organize our thoughts, needs, goals, and create task-oriented, STEP-BY-STEP plans to help us initiate the process. You can plan out each day, but know, the plans may shape-shift as life happens. It’s okay! Breathe and keep readjusting and flowing as best you can.
TIP: If you find something lingers on your checklist for days while you continue to ignore it, chances are it’s more of a ‘project’ than a ‘task’. Break it down into smaller steps, starting with the highest priority of the steps.

And Wah Lah! For the next couple weeks or so, you are moving forward with creating your dreams/visions into physical reality! When the Full Moon approaches, it will offer you another chance to reassess, celebrate and adjust your day-to-day activities appropriately. You can find more advice on DIY Full Moon Rituals here!
